5 Ways to Spend More Time in Your Backyard

If you want to celebrate the great outdoors during Earth Day weekend, there’s no need to venture any farther than your very own backyard. The TurfMutt Foundation offers these great ideas for enjoying nature right at home. Grab some sunscreen and try one of the following:

1. Take indoor activities outside. Whether it’s playing a board game, exercising, working or cooking, do it outdoors. The natural light and fresh air will only add to the fun.

2. Have a video call. Whether it’s a work-related Zoom meeting or a FaceTime with a far-away friend, there’s no need to do it within the confines of your home or office. Head outdoors to your patio table or lounge chair and enjoy the sunshine while you virtually connect with others.

3. Get educated. If you’re taking an online class or attending a virtual event, do it outdoors. Your yard is also a great place to partake in hands-on learning by cultivating flowers and vegetables, doing a little bird watching or studying local insect and animal life. Nature education isn’t just for kids.

4. Create your own spa day. No need to head to a pricey spa to recharge your mind and body—create your own soul-enriching relaxation experience right in your own yard instead. Listen to soothing sounds while swinging in a hammock, meditate surrounded by flowers in your garden or let the lawn serve as your yoga mat. Being surrounded by fresh air and natural beauty will bring this spa-like experience to another level.

5. Have a party. There’s no better place to entertain friends and family than your backyard on a beautiful day. You don’t need a particular reason or a lot of guests to celebrate either. Whether it’s just your immediate family or the entire neighborhood, an outdoor gathering under the sun or stars will lift everyone’s spirits.
